Replacing the Ignition Lock Assembly
Buy a new incinerator lock kit
Most vehicle combustion assemblies can be easily replaced and manufactured in-house by most home mechanics. Before you begin, order a replacement set from your local auto parts dealer. You must include the exact model year, make and model of your vehicle in order to receive the correct replacement part. Purchase a new ignition switch assembly before removing the defective unit. Before attempting a fresh install, compare the two to ensure that the replacement types are the same.
Remove the ignition cap
Typically, most cars have a separate plastic cover that covers the steering column and
ignition switch. First set the tilt wheel to the lowest position, then remove the cover latches and remove the plastic cover. In some cars, the upper and lower parts of the steering wheel are included in the casing, while in others the ignition casing is separate. If you do not have an adjustable steering column, remove the steering column bracket from under the dashboard and hang the column. Remove the fasteners from the support cover, separate the two halves and remove the plastic.
Make sure the new ignition key is well greased.
If the primer has been removed, compare a new sample to see if it matches. The new ignition switch comes with factory oil and is ready to install. Check that all external moving parts are greased, clogged with a new wrench, and that the cylinder moves back and forth slowly. If the combustion cylinder is not properly lubricated, apply liquid graphite or similar grease to the cylinder. If necessary, purchase grease from your nearest auto parts store.
Replace cylinder and reconnect switch connector
When the new assembly is satisfied with the old assembly and is properly lubricated, replace the cylinder and make sure it is locked in place. Reconnect the switch connector and reconnect the previously removed panel. Use a wrench to rotate the cylinder forward until the head locks into place. Make sure the
ignition cable is connected to the new cylinder before pulling the switch.
Start the engine and make sure the steering wheel is unlocked
Before installing the steering column (if removed) and plastic cover, make sure the engine is running and the steering wheel is unlocked. To do this, insert the key, press the handle against the set screw and turn. Steering column bolts usually have a torque specification in the specifications section of the vehicle service manual. If there is no torque, tighten the screw with the knob on the handle. Axle bolts must be tightened to prevent vibration during operation.
